Intent, Mistakes & Golden Light
Rainbows rest where we least expect.
Even over my former stomping grounds, Green Mountain. After dusk.
Melly likes reading on her iPad. Ena digs her Beats on iTunes.
Bingo: there’s my lighting inspiration. Forget Profoto for the moment, I let Apple direct my lighting approach to this shot at Ena & Melly’s couple portrait session.
Searching for a Golden Location
So much of photography is being at the right place and the right time. Location, location, location.
Which is why location scouting can serve as an important component of finding that ‘perfect spot.’
In this case, I was searching for a metaphor. A place where gold sits at the end of the rainbow. I scouted a place where they could sit, enjoy, relax, and enjoy the view of city light on a mountain night. Golden, Colorado seemed the perfect spot. I ran on these trails for years, so I know the rattlesnake den locations, where the Big Dipper appears, and how I best use Golden (the city, than is) lights to my advance.
This is where a nice long 30 second exposure comes in handy. Everyone, including my camera, can absorb the ambient glow of a fading summer light. While absorbed in a different kind of light of creative expression, thanks to Apple devices.
Rainbow Luck
The primary light source for this creative portrait of Melly and Ena came from an iPad and iPhone. Nothing else other than the glow of from a birthplaces of Coors (Golden, CO). Which just happens to be golden in the distant. Like gold under a rainbow with a pot of gold.
There’s a metaphor we can all benefit from. You never know where you’re gonna find light.
