Emily & Martin {Portland, Oregon}

Emily & Martin remain gregarious, serious, and unconventional. They are among the best at what they do: being themselves. Martin proposed to Emily on the Wednesday of Burning Man 2012. I was there and didn’t even know it.

Martin saw my story posted on the Jack Rabbit Speaks, a e-newsletter sent out to 60,000+ like-minded Burners. He was intringued & interested in my work photographing families and forwarded it along to Emily. “I know this guy,” Emily proclaimed. “He was in my high school class.” The rest was history. After all, it’s a small world. Especially among fellow Burners.

They hired me to photograph their wedding at the Yale Union (YU) Contemporary Art Center in Portland, Oregon on February 2, Groundhog’s Day. I’ve never known a wedding to be held on the occasion. Which makes it even the more special (that’s smart thinking!).

This Portland wedding was inspired in many ways by the light, colors, and timelessness experience of Burning Man. They are among perfect clients. Martin coordinated the reception details, complete with LEDs from his camp. Along came 13 of his fellow Burning Man friends, plus me. And a bear skin, some Oregon grape leaves, timeless love, and a fun-spirit to share with close friends and family. This was more than a special wedding for me, as I was able to reaqauint with fellow classmates I hadn’t seen in 16 years. It was about 1/10th of my graduating class to put it into perspective. It was perfect. And I am so glad to have my good friend Matt Steaffens to join me in this momentous occasion as a second photographer.

They decided to see each other before the ceremony, which allowed us a chance to wrap up creative portraits in time for their evening ceremony. The Karaoke From Hell did an amazing job for live karaoke entertainment as did Lamb’s Table Catering for amazing food. And the Wilson Wedding Fun-Booth left me grinning from ear to ear with amazing fun pictures. And I thank you both for allowing time to create my “Impossible Project” images.

Martin & Emily, words can not describe the fun and kindness you shared with me on the wedding day. You were chill, trusting, and so so so fun. I am happy to connect with you both.
