I’m thankful for the challenging assignments have kept me exploring, thinking creatively, and pushing the limits. 85,000 client miles flown this year. I’m fortunate and blessed to be busy. As much as I like to plan, I am ready to be done with my nutty 2012 schedual. Toooooo much travel. There’s nothing like being home in my bed at the end of a long day’s work. Family time. Meeting new friends. Sustaining old friendships. All of this takes time which becomes difficult when I’m not around.
I like a clean plate, not always full.
Going forward, I will be closely analyzing at the amount of travel opportunities I accept. I’ve never charged a travel fee for destination work, just reimbursable expenses like airfare, lodging, car. If the event is on a Saturday, for example, I’m packing my bags early Thursday morning to arrive at least a day before I’m needed. That way, travel delays don’t cause me show up on the day of the event. Clients care about this. Afterwards, however, clients are not impacted if I’m left stranded in Reno on the way home, dealing with luggage delays, unreliable hotel internet, and cheap coffee. I deal with that.
My solution?
A travel fee, $500. Plus travel expenses. Nonnegotiable. This helps to offset things like dog care, the $10 iTunes gift card for the neighbor watching the house, or the special person responsible for keeping the garden watered and loved. And the extra nice dinner date surprise with my wife for missing me so much. If clients don’t want to pay the travel fee, it is a sign they don’t value my time away from home enough for me to work with them. Simple as that.
If you are already working with me on finalizing wedding plans/contract, the $500 travel fee doesn’t apply.
If you would like to work with me, keep in mind booking season for 2013 weddings are under way. If you’d like to work with me for a wedding, portrait session, or mentoring session don’t procrastinate finalizing dates and details! Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Contact me and let’s make it happen.
