#95. Get a significant mention on The Strobist
I’m honored to be featured on the Holy Grail of lighting blogs, The Strobist. Read the interview here.
We’re the short guys, below, in shorts.
I’m so excited!!!! This has been a goal of mine since 2007, as an effort to scale this blog to a larger platform with intent to help other photographers.
If you are a guy and a photographer, chances are you’ve heard of The Strobist (95% of his readership are much like me). David Hobby, the blog author, is a Jedi master of light. He writes with a Jimmy-the-bartender matter-of-factness, blending humor with lighting technicals. He’s like a favorite professor I never had. And if there’s anyone that would share the DIY speedlight hack needed to clock 1/100,000 flash sync, it’d be Hobby.
Tech humor, duct tape, creativity… garnished with light… that’s how I like to roll. No different than the time we light painted a helicopter with a homemade soft box, created a Scarface-inspired portrait at f/16 sans strobes, used an box car to create perfect sandwich light, or learned how to photograph ghost trains. Lighting remains an important part of my photography style. I use big strobes, speed lights, available light, fire, flash lights in good fun, of course.
I’d just never imagine I’d be talking about lighting an uber traditional wedding image with a medium format camera.
One of my favorite images from Lindsey & Matt’s wedding is featured as I share a behind-the-scenes glimpse:
How did this happen?
I thank 4 years of work and a dose of Twitter. I admit, social media and I don’t always get along. Often, I feel I just can’t keep up. But I’m learning to embrace it. And I enjoy the payoff when I get a chance to connect with a new friend.
“I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim, and now I am overwhelmed by this decent and good feeling,” writes Frida Kahlo. This sums my Twitter experience.
Channeling attention with Twitter can be more effective than email, I’m finding. Steady persistence pays off.
I screamed like a banshee after reading this:
I’m probably the only one that snags screen grabs from Twitter to email Mom. “How exciting, Dear,” she would reply.
A loyal follower of David is a friend of mine. And I am so proud to be apart of this photography community!
I’ve met Mr. Hobby only once, at his Flash Bus tour with Joe McNally I review here. However, I hope to share a beer with him at GPP 2013 in Dubai.
David Hobby, thank you for being such a leader in this industry. Keep wearing those shorts!
