Denby & Henni {Sneak Peek}

Editing these images from Denby and Henni’s Oahu destination wedding from yesterday brought me back to my painting days in college. After 9 months of study and practice, I feel like I’m making images I’ve had in my mind for the past several years. Lighting, composition, moments: all key to a good photo, yes. Yet, I never could quite obtain the ‘painterly look’ I’ve had in my mind until I stumbled upon shooting medium format, thanks to the image quality, shallow depth of field, the color gamut, the dynamic range… all coupled with the ability to use my flash at 1/1600 sec. Good gear doesn’t make art, but it it sure helps.

Here’s a sneak peek of a few portraits created at the Dillingham Ranch located on the North Shore of Waialua, Hawaii. Stay tuned this week for the full post featuring gorgeous details, priceless moments, along with more wedding day creative portraits.

Gear Notes :: All images shot with the PhaseOne 645DF, the IQ 140 medium format digital body (40 Megapixels) and the Schneider 55mm LS lens. I lit of the wedding portraits using the Einstein 640 I review here. Power settings were set to full power. Camera settings during the day shots were at 1/1600 sec ranging from f/6.3 to f/8, ISO 50. I used a Creative Light Octa to soften the light on the last two images and the rest were a simple 30 degree reflector. CaptureOne was used to process the RAW files. The final image represents light painting on a whole new level for me. #Happy Dance #CameraGeek #WeddingArt
