My Office Today
At the end of a busy wedding season, my creative workspace smiles at me. It’s clean. This week I finalized the last of my wedding albums for the year. Done and done. ALL of my clients married before November received their completed images AND wedding album(s). That makes me super happy.
Not every day feels like today. Weightlessness off the shoulders would be an understatement. Even better than handing a big semester project, more like a thesis. Client work, done.
Which means I can shift focus to a few personal projects sitting on the back burner. Willy’s Trip To The Ocean, The Mirror Project, among others.
It’s a typical day for Willy, my office buddy. He snores at my feet during normal business hours as I type this sentence. It’s decent white noise. I don’t mind it. He’s been curled up in my shadow a lot this year, and for that I’m thankful. He gets excited during Skype sessions (he knows the sound) when meeting with clients to finalize their album. He knows the frustration when computers crash, the internet dies, or my favorite CD gets scratched. He drops bones on the tile to grab my attention, which I love. This year, 75% of my shoots were out of town. Which meant lots of time in my creative man cave. With Willy.
Today is one of those self-reflection days. The kind where you can step outside your skin, and look at the year with objectivity. It’s been a darn good year, despite a few emotional curveballs and life happenings. And with the change of seasons, comes important reflections and future ambitions. I’m more of a seasonal person than I ever knew. Which perhaps explains Tomte posts and my anticipation of holiday cards.
A glimpse of my small workspace, the antithesis of cube farm memories, complete with a standing desk, dual 27” displays docked to my laptop, Lego sets, and inspiring artwork by mentors and colleagues. And loud music staves off winter doldrums. My happy light shines to my left. A double-walled coffee mug to my right. Cozy low ceilings my head misses by four inches as I enter the room. Despite the small windows, I love the view it provides my creative soul.
